Your Identity as a Dad
I'm the leader of my pack.
What do you want your Dad identity to be?
Do you want to be a SuperDad? Loving Dad? Committed Parent? Family Man?
James Clear defines "identity" as repeated beingness.
So, who are you committed to being, repeatedly, as a father? Who are you committed to being even when you're tired and a baby is screaming in your face?
Shortly before the birth of my daughter, I took up the identity of Leader of the Pack. This identity means something to me. My pack is my family: my beautiful wife, my dog Leon, and now, my daughter Maeve. As parents, both my wife and I need to be leaders, of course, but it was important for me to keep ever present the fact that I must maintain leading this pack.
Choosing an identity as a Dad, once you've found what works for you, simplifies things. With this North Star identity set, it's no longer a guessing game, you've already decided how you're going to repeatedly show up as a dad.
You = ________?
When new challenges appear, or when moments to savor are in front of me, I have my identity to ground in to show up to whatever is in front of me: I'm the leader my pack.
What's your Dad identity?
You've got this.
